About the Lab

I’m Professor L—an educator, editor, and writing mentor with over 15 years of experience teaching composition. I created this Lab with college students in mind, but returning learners and lifelong writers will also find the support they need to build practical skills—one clear step at a time. Whether you're stuck on sentence structure or ready to tackle advanced essays, you’ll find structured lessons, real examples, and guidance designed to help you grow as a writer.

How it works

This Lab organizes writing instruction into 7 skill tiers—from basic sentences to advanced essays.
The 7 Tiers:
• Tier 1: Foundations – Learn the parts of a sentence
• Tier 2: Sentence Skills – Combine, expand, and repair
• Tier 3: Paragraphs – Focus, support, and coherence
• Tier 4: Essay Structure – Strong introductions, conclusions, and body paragraphs
• Tier 5: Style – Diction, clarity, tone, and rhetorical devices
• Tier 6 (in development): Research & MLA citation
• Tier 7 (in development): Argument & Advanced Rhetoric
Access Plans:
This site follows a tiered structure—starting with grammar and sentence fluency and building toward advanced rhetorical techniques and stylistic control.
Tier 1–5 available Fall 2025
Free access students can explore select lessons in Tiers 1–4
Learn foundational grammar and paragraph skills with sample lessons and practice activities.
Standard access gives complete access to Tiers 2–3 and select Tier 4 Skills
Build sentence fluency and paragraph strength with full access to core writing skills.
Full unlocks everything through Tier 5, including worksheets and quizzes.

Tiers 6 and 7 are in development and will be released as part of a future Advanced Access plan. These upper levels are primarily intended for experienced writers, educators, and those seeking mastery of advanced writing concepts.
